Bahrain and France have taken significant steps to enhance their strategic partnership across several sectors, including defence, energy, and technology. In a recent meeting, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in these critical areas.
The talks, held during an official visit, focused on advancing the longstanding ties between the two nations and exploring opportunities to support shared economic and security interests. Both leaders discussed regional and international developments, with particular attention to the Middle East’s current challenges.
A key outcome of the meeting was the emphasis on defence cooperation. King Hamad underscored the importance of working together to ensure regional stability, condemning recent Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and praising France’s support for maritime security. Macron echoed this sentiment, reiterating France’s solidarity with Bahrain and its dedication to enhancing coordination on defence and regional stability.
Energy security also featured prominently in the discussions. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, aiming to develop Bahrain’s civilian nuclear energy programme through specialised training and knowledge-sharing. This agreement, signed by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani and France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, marks a significant step toward closer energy collaboration.
In addition to defence and energy, the leaders explored opportunities for joint projects in industry and transportation, including a proposed railway connectivity project linking Bahrain with other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Macron highlighted potential industrial collaborations, particularly with Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), further solidifying the two countries’ economic ties.
During the visit, King Hamad awarded President Macron the Collar of the Order of Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Exceptional Class, in recognition of his efforts to strengthen the relationship between Bahrain and France. This gesture, along with the discussions’ outcomes, underscores both nations’ commitment to deepening their strategic partnership and expanding cooperation across various sectors.
