NATO’s Mission Creep? Trump Pushes Alliance into Global Trade Enforcement

President Donald Trump is pushing for a significant case of “mission creep” within NATO, urging the 75-year-old military alliance to expand its mandate into the realm of global trade enforcement by collectively imposing tariffs on China. This radical proposal would fundamentally alter the character and purpose of the organization.

The suggestion was part of a broader strategic announcement on Truth Social regarding the war in Ukraine. Trump proposed that NATO, “as a group,” should place “50% to 100% tariffs on China” to punish Beijing for its economic relationship with Moscow. This would transform NATO from a defensive military pact into an offensive economic one.

This new role as a trade enforcer would be in addition to the demands he is already placing on the alliance, namely the requirement of a complete and total oil embargo against Russia. Trump’s vision is of a NATO that uses not just soldiers and tanks, but also tariffs and embargoes, as its primary weapons.

This push for mission creep is likely to be met with resistance from many members who see NATO’s strength in its clear, focused mission of collective defense. Expanding into global economic disputes, particularly with a superpower like China, would be a controversial and potentially divisive move for the transatlantic alliance.
