After concluding a significant White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, President Donald Trump’s diplomatic focus immediately turned to Russia, culminating in a direct phone call with President Vladimir Putin.
The August 18 meeting with Zelensky and European leaders was critical for discussing the framework of security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump’s subsequent call to Putin indicates an effort to engage all parties in the resolution process.
From these talks, Trump has articulated a clear policy: Europe will be expected to lead the security efforts for Ukraine. He has defined the U.S. role as providing “backup,” a supportive but not primary position.
In his update, Trump also revealed a previous, face-to-face meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The agenda for that summit included the ambitious topic of post-conflict nuclear arms reduction between the two superpowers.
