New Sharjah-Oman Route Boosts Efficiency, Cuts Cargo Transit to 35 Days

A new logistics corridor between Sharjah and Oman is revolutionizing cargo transit times, slashing them from nearly three months to just 35 days. This strategic initiative aims to enhance supply chain efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and strengthen trade connections among the UAE, Oman, and broader regional markets. The corridor links Sharjah with Oman’s key ports, including Sohar, Duqm, and Salalah, utilizing the Khatmat Malaha and Al Madam border crossings. As the corridor operations mature, authorities anticipate even shorter transit times.

To incentivize the use of this corridor, Sharjah has implemented toll exemptions for cargo trucks using authorized routes from Oman. Additionally, the initiative offers faster customs clearance, streamlined cargo movement, and allows businesses to complete customs procedures at inland container terminals, rather than at border crossings, to expedite the process. Logistics costs could see a reduction of approximately 15%, contingent on cargo type and transportation needs, making it particularly advantageous for manufacturers by speeding up the movement of both raw materials and finished goods.

This development is integral to Sharjah’s strategy to bolster its standing as a regional logistics and manufacturing hub. The emirate, with over 3,000 factories contributing about a quarter of its GDP, stands to gain significantly from this improved trade route. It is poised to increase exports and draw international investors eager to tap into markets across Africa, India, and Asia. The corridor, operational since May 14, facilitates bidirectional cargo movement, supported by synchronized customs procedures, real-time data exchange, and dedicated fast-track shipment lanes.

The corridor’s launch is a critical step towards optimizing supply chain dynamics in the region, offering a competitive edge to businesses through cost-effective and efficient logistics solutions. By fostering stronger trade ties and enhancing the flow of goods, this initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting the economic landscape of Sharjah and its trade partners. As the corridor continues to evolve, it promises to deliver greater connectivity and economic benefits to the involved regions.
