Iran Attack on UAE Tankers Disrupts Trade, 1 Fatality and 8 Injuries

In the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage, two oil tankers operated by the United Arab Emirates were targeted in an attack, resulting in the death of one crew member and injuries to eight others. The UAE Ministry of Defence reported that the tankers, named Mombasa and Al Bahyah, were struck by Iranian cruise missiles as they navigated the southern route of this strategic waterway. Tragically, an Indian crew member lost their life aboard the Mombasa, while four of the injured sustained serious injuries.

Following the incident, the UAE condemned the missile strike, describing it as a grave breach of international law that poses a threat to both regional security and the safety of maritime navigation. Significant damage was inflicted on both vessels, further intensifying concerns over the safe passage of ships through this vital oil shipping route. Oman’s Maritime Security Centre confirmed that rescue operations successfully saved 18 crew members from Al Bahyah, though three individuals remain unaccounted for.

India, with 30 of its nationals among the 46 crew members on the two tankers, reacted to the attack with strong condemnation. The Indian government extended condolences to the bereaved families and is collaborating with local authorities to provide assistance to those impacted by the incident.

This recent attack has escalated tensions in an already volatile region, leading to a surge in global oil prices, which reached a four-week high. The heightened security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply is transported, have underscored the vulnerability of this key maritime corridor.
