Instagram Encrypted Messages Set to End: The Numbers Behind the Decision

Meta’s decision to remove end-to-end encryption from Instagram DMs starting May 8, 2026, was ultimately driven by low usage numbers. The company disclosed the change through a quiet update on its help page. Meta’s spokesperson confirmed that very few Instagram users ever chose to enable the feature.

The statistics behind the decision paint a clear picture. When Instagram introduced encrypted DMs in 2023, the feature was opt-in. Most users kept the default non-encrypted settings, meaning encryption remained a niche preference rather than a mainstream choice. This gave Meta the data it needed to justify removal.

Once the change is implemented, all Instagram direct messages will be accessible to Meta’s systems. The company will have a clearer view of what users are discussing in private than it has had since the feature was introduced. For some, this is a welcome development; for others, it’s a cause for concern.

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Interpol, and police forces in Australia and the UK, had long argued that encrypted Instagram messages were sheltering criminals. Child safety organizations supported their position, noting that encryption without safety measures created risks. Australia reportedly saw the feature disappear ahead of the global deadline.

Privacy advocates reject the idea that low adoption is a valid reason to remove a privacy feature. Digital Rights Watch argued that the solution was to improve the feature’s visibility and usability, not to eliminate it. They also flagged the commercial dimension, noting that access to DM data could benefit Meta’s advertising and AI development programs.
