Rubio Projects Three, Six, Nine Month Improvements in Venezuela Under Interim Government

Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed confidence that Venezuela’s situation will continue improving over three, six, and nine-month timeframes under interim government leadership, arguing that conditions would be substantially worse had Nicolas Maduro remained in power. The Wednesday testimony provided specific projections during his first comprehensive Senate hearing defending the military intervention.

The former Florida senator emphasized that Venezuela has already demonstrably improved compared to four weeks earlier and suggested this positive trajectory will continue as interim authorities cooperate with American demands. He outlined economic frameworks including restoration of limited oil sales with strict Treasury oversight and projected continued progress toward stabilization.

Rubio acknowledged that recovery cannot occur overnight but expressed optimism about the country’s direction under acting president Delcy Rodriguez. He described cooperation as productive and suggested that interim leaders understand compliance with requirements including democratic reforms brings tangible benefits. The Secretary met with opposition leader Maria Corina Machado after the hearing.

Democrats challenged these optimistic projections, questioning whether they align with on-the-ground realities given continuing economic struggles and the persistence of Maduro-era officials in governmental positions. Senator Jeanne Shaheen asked whether replacing one authoritarian leader with his former associates justifies claimed improvements.

The hearing also addressed multiple foreign policy concerns including Greenland, NATO tensions, Iran, and China. Rubio sought to reassure allies disturbed by Trump’s aggressive rhetoric while defending the president’s confrontational diplomatic style. He maintained that fundamental American commitments remain intact despite contentious debates about alliance burden-sharing.
