Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani recently engaged in discussions in Moscow, focusing on enhancing political, economic, and energy relations between their nations. This meeting unfolded against the backdrop of the eighth Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit, an assembly that includes major natural gas producers such as Iran, Russia, Qatar, and Algeria.
The leaders underscored the significance of deepening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation. A key topic of their conversation centered on improving coordination among gas-exporting countries to safeguard and advance their shared interests in the energy sector.
This diplomatic engagement occurs amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which escalated following US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks across the region, including actions against Qatar. Qatar has since played a pivotal role in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating regional tensions and facilitating negotiations between Iran and the United States.
Following the meeting with the Qatari emir, President Pezeshkian was slated to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. These discussions aimed to address regional developments and further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Tehran and Moscow. Russia has also expressed its readiness to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing Middle East conflict.
