An oil tanker named EL GAIA was reported to have caught fire after colliding with naval mines while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran. The incident occurred as the tanker was attempting to traverse a route that Iranian authorities had previously designated as off-limits. Despite efforts, Iranian officials confirmed that the fire could not be contained.
The IRGC Navy highlighted that warnings had been issued about the risks associated with using the restricted route. They emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and is under their control. Additionally, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority issued cautions to insurance companies, protection and indemnity insurers, and classification societies, advising them against servicing vessels that breach maritime traffic restrictions.
