Pakistan Sees Positive Signs in Mediating Iran-US Tensions Amid Caution

Pakistan is expressing cautious optimism regarding its ongoing efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States amid persistent regional tensions. The country’s military has been actively involved in diplomatic initiatives aimed at preventing further escalation of conflicts in the Middle East.

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s military, noted the significance of recent visits by Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir to Tehran. Munir’s trips, including one on Monday with high-ranking officials from Saudi Arabia and Turkey, suggest promising developments. However, Chaudhry warned that there are still influential parties that could derail diplomatic progress.

During Munir’s recent visit to Iran, he was accompanied by Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, underscoring a collective regional effort to address the ongoing Iran-US tensions. These discussions have been linked to the defence agreement signed on August 7 by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, which mandates that an attack on any member is considered an attack on all, thereby reinforcing their commitment to collective security.

Chaudhry highlighted that the agreement allows for the possibility of expanding membership to other countries that share the goals of regional peace and deterrence, although such decisions would ultimately be made by the political leaders of the founding countries.

When questioned about the potential deployment of additional Pakistani troops to Saudi Arabia, Chaudhry indicated that such a decision would depend on the security situation and bilateral consultations. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to defending Saudi Arabia and protecting the holy cities of Makkah and Medina, while clarifying that Pakistan is not involved in the conflict in Yemen.

These diplomatic endeavors come at a time of heightened concern over the possibility of the Iran-US confrontation exacerbating regional instability. Cooperation among regional powers is increasingly viewed as essential to avoiding further escalation and ensuring broader security across the Middle East.
