EasyJet Warns EU Free Cabin Luggage Laws Will Eliminate Pricing Transparency

EasyJet has argued that European Union baggage regulations could paradoxically reduce pricing transparency by forcing airlines to bundle costs rather than itemize them clearly.

The legislative initiative would mandate free cabin baggage for all passengers across European aviation. European lawmakers voted with strong majorities to support regulations guaranteeing entitlements for both personal items and larger carry-on bags.

The airline’s leadership contends that current unbundled pricing actually enhances transparency. Passengers can see exactly what services cost and choose accordingly, making informed decisions based on individual needs and budgets.

Mandatory free baggage would require airlines to incorporate all costs into base fares, making it harder for passengers to understand what they’re paying for and compare offerings across carriers. This could reduce rather than enhance consumer decision-making capabilities.

Beyond transparency concerns, the regulations would eliminate significant ancillary revenue. EasyJet generates billions annually from optional services, helping maintain competitive pricing. The airline reported quarterly losses of £93 million while seeing strong booking momentum.
