Mandelson’s Paradox: Labour Peer Champions Trump and Brexit’s “Benefits”

In a speech full of political paradoxes, Lord Mandelson—a key architect of New Labour and a fierce pro-European—has emerged as an unlikely champion for both Donald Trump and the perceived benefits of Brexit. This stunning ideological reversal has left many political observers scrambling to understand his motivations.

The ambassador, long associated with the center-left establishment, praised the right-wing populist Trump as a “wake-up call” to that very same establishment. He lauded his disruptive style and his connection with voters who feel abandoned by mainstream politics, a position that seems at odds with Mandelson’s entire political career.

Equally surprising was his argument on Brexit. After years of campaigning against leaving the EU, Mandelson now claims that Brexit has made the UK more relevant and attractive to the US. He argued that freedom from European regulations is a key asset in attracting the American investment needed for a new tech alliance, adopting a line straight from the playbook of his erstwhile political opponents.

This embrace of contradictory positions points to a purely pragmatic calculus. Mandelson appears to believe that the strategic imperative to align with the US and counter China is so overwhelming that it requires shedding old political loyalties and ideologies. It’s a high-risk strategy that redefines him as a geopolitical realist above all else.
